Keystone sits just over Vail Pass in Summit County, and this season it opened first: on October 30, 2026, two weeks before Vail. A day there, or a few nights, is a natural add-on to a Vail stay, provided someone handles Vail Pass.
The drive
- Distance: about 38 miles
- Typical drive: about 50 minutes in good conditions
- Route: I-70 east over Vail Pass to Silverthorne/Dillon (Exit 205), then US-6 east to Keystone
- High point: Vail Pass, 10,662 feet
In winter, plan for extra time. The Traction Law is always in effect on this part of I-70 from September 1 to May 31, and storms can close Vail Pass for hours. Our Vail Pass winter driving guide covers what to expect.

When a private car makes sense
We found no direct public bus between Vail and Keystone, so the realistic choices are your own car or ours. Driving yourself is fine on a clear day with good tires. A private car makes sense when:
- The forecast calls for snow on the pass
- You're carrying skis, boots and kids
- You want après without anyone watching the clock or the road
- You're moving lodging between Vail and Keystone with luggage
What every ride includes
- Pickup at your door in Vail, Beaver Creek, Avon or Edwards
- Help with luggage, skis and boards
- Stops on request, in Silverthorne or anywhere on the way
- Child seats on request
- A mountain-experienced chauffeur in a luxury full-size SUV (Expedition MAX, Yukon XL, Suburban or similar) or an 11-passenger Ford Transit
Book your ride and tell us your plan for the day.
Making a day of it
We'll suggest a departure that gets you to Keystone for the first lifts, then agree on a return time, with the weather in mind, so you're back in Vail for dinner. Keystone, like Vail and Beaver Creek, is a Vail Resorts mountain on the Epic Pass family; check your product's restricted dates before you go. Moving lodging instead? We carry the luggage and gear in the same trip. If you'd like to compare Summit County options, Breckenridge is a similar drive: see Vail to Breckenridge.
